The celebration of the Japanese Emperor’s National Day on Wednesday, 25 February 2026, at the Hilton Hotel in Yaoundé, provided a distinguished platform for reinforcing Cameroon-Japan relations. Among the attendees, the Cameroon-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group stood out, demonstrating the Parliament’s active engagement in diplomatic and cultural exchanges. This year’s celebration was notably marked by the absence of the late Dean and President of the group, Hon. KOA MFEGUE Laurentine, spouse MBEDE, whose presence was deeply missed and remembered by all participants.

Organized at the invitation of His Excellency MINAMI KENTARO, Ambassador of Japan to Cameroon, the ceremony brought together high-ranking government officials, esteemed members of the diplomatic corps, and Japanese expatriates residing in Cameroon. Representing the Cameroon-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group, its Secretary, Hon. BINDOUA Mathurin Germain, underscored the Group’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening bilateral parliamentary relations.

The evening began at 18:00 with the ceremonial playing of the national anthems of both countries, a symbolic moment that set the tone for the evening’s celebrations. Ambassador Minami delivered an eloquent speech emphasizing the excellence of Cameroon-Japan relations and conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from His Majesty, Emperor NARUHITO. Guests were then treated to the traditional cutting of the ceremonial cake, marking the Emperor’s birthday, a highlight that brought together tradition, diplomacy, and celebration.

The reception that followed was characterized by cordiality and conviviality, with lively exchanges among the guests fostering deeper mutual understanding and cooperation.
