International Women’s Day 2026: The National Assembly Sets the Pace with a Week of Purposeful Action.

As the world moves steadily toward the 41st edition of International Women’s Day, the National Assembly of Cameroon has unveiled a rich, people-centered programme that blends health, sports, dialogue, and celebration, affirming its commitment to women’s rights, wellbeing, and empowerment. Under the coordination of the Secretariat General, the 2026 celebrations are designed not merely as commemorative rituals, but as a sequence of impactful engagements addressing real social, legal, and health concerns affecting women and girls.
The activities officially gained momentum on Monday, 02 March 2026, with a blood pressure and blood glucose screening campaign held at the Medical Centre of the Paul Biya Glass House. This preventive health initiative targeted parliamentary staff, particularly women, underscoring the Institution’s emphasis on early detection and wellness as a foundation for productivity and dignity at work. Earlier, on Saturday, 28 February 2026, women of the National Assembly had already joined the nationwide sports walk organised by the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and the Family (MINPROFF) at the 20th May Boulevard, symbolically launching the festivities through physical activity and collective mobilisation.
From Wednesday to Friday, the programme transitions into activities that foster teamwork and resilience, with a women’s football gala match scheduled for Thursday, 05 March 2026. This encounter will pit the female staff of the National Assembly against their counterparts from the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries (MINEPIA) at the Military Stadium. Preparations and training sessions are already in full swing, reflecting a spirit of discipline, unity, and friendly rivalry ahead of this much-anticipated sporting moment.
A major intellectual highlight is set for Friday, 06 March 2026, with a conference-debate and interactive forum focusing on women’s and girls’ access to justice. The session will bring together legal experts and institutional actors to examine the specific rights of women and girls under national and international legal instruments, address human and social rights violations with insights from the Cameroon National Commission on Human Rights, and explore legal protections as well as access-to-justice mechanisms within Cameroon’s judicial system. The programme also includes interactive exchanges, recreational activities, and a causerie on understanding and living one’s femininity, creating a balanced space for learning, expression, and wellbeing.
The week will culminate on Sunday, 08 March 2026, with the International Women’s Day ceremony, featuring a solemn parade followed by a convivial banquet bringing together women and institutional partners. This final day will stand as both a celebration of achievements and a renewed call to action for gender equality.
Through this carefully structured programme, the National Assembly demonstrates that International Women’s Day is not just a date on the calendar, but a process of engagement combining health awareness, legal education, sportsmanship, and institutional solidarity. As the remaining activities unfold from mid-week to Sunday, expectations are high that the 2026 edition will leave a lasting imprint, one rooted in empowerment, inclusion, and concrete action for women within and beyond the walls of the August Institution.
