The Senate of Cameroon has announced that it will host a major Parliamentary Conference from 24 to 25 March 2026, convened on the margins of the 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The event is expected to bring together more than 400 delegates, including members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), government officials and distinguished international personalities, underscoring Cameroon’s growing role as a platform for parliamentary diplomacy in Africa.

The WTO Ministerial Conference is the highest decision-making body of the World Trade Organization, where trade ministers and senior officials from member countries meet to discuss global trade rules and policy priorities. Scheduled to take place in Cameroon in March 2026, the 14th Ministerial Conference will provide an opportunity to address key trade issues such as market access, development concerns, agricultural support and the integration of developing economies into the global trading system. The parliamentary conference organised by the Senate will run in parallel, enabling lawmakers from around the world to engage in dialogue on trade, governance, sustainable development and the role of parliaments in shaping international economic policy.

In preparation for the two-day parliamentary gathering, Cameroon’s Upper Chamber is actively finalising logistics and operational arrangements to ensure a successful and memorable event on national soil. Gustave Léopold Ngane, Secretary General of the Senate, together with senior collaborators, held a detailed working session at the venue designated to host the conference. The focus of the planning meeting was to review the site infrastructure, confirm technical specifications and ensure that all organisational details are aligned with the high standards expected of such a multinational gathering.

According to officials, the Senate’s leadership has issued clear instructions to guarantee a meticulous and unforgettable organisation of the encounter, reflecting Cameroon’s commitment to parliamentary diplomacy and international cooperation. With the participation of IPU members representing national parliaments from across continents, the conference is expected to foster interparliamentary dialogue on trade governance, democratic oversight of trade agreements and the role of legislators in advancing equitable and sustainable economic reforms.

Cameroon’s hosting of both the WTO Ministerial Conference and the parallel parliamentary meeting underscores the country’s strategic engagement in global governance. It also highlights the increasing importance of legislative bodies in discussions historically dominated by executive actors. By facilitating conversation between lawmakers, government representatives and international stakeholders, the Senate is positioning itself as a bridge between national legislative priorities and global policy frameworks.

As the March dates draw closer, delegates and partner organisations are expected to finalise their participation, with preparatory committees in Cameroon working to ensure that the event achieves its objectives and leaves a positive imprint on the international parliamentary calendar.
